Trash Collection

The Wexford Conservancy currently uses GFL Environmental as our trash service. Service dates are Mondays and Thursdays with Recyclable materials being picked up on Thursdays only.

If residents have large items such as furniture or appliances, they must call GFL Environmental at 540 899 7722 and arrange for pickup. Part of Wexford’s contract covers special pick-ups. Such special pick-up items should only be placed at the curb on the scheduled pick-up date.

Televisions, computers, monitors, car batteries, tires, gas lawn mowers, etc., cannot be put out with the trash and must be kept inside.  Because these items have hazardous materials in them, the trash company will not pick them up because of the additional cost to dispose of them.  Residents must take these items directly to the landfill on their own or make other arrangements.

Wexford Resolution 2013-02 – Establishment of Rules Relating to the Storage and Collection of Trash

Wexford’s rules on trash are in accordance with Prince William County Code, Chapter 22 Refuse

_______

Why should I care about following the rules on trash?

> Trash invites criminals and critters, spreads germs and fouls water quality

> It lowers property values

> It is inconsiderate of others

> Ignoring the rules will result in a minimum of a $50 assessment on each trash day

> Violations of County Ordinances can result in a citation and a possible fine

RULES TO NOTE

Trash must be stored in an approved storage container with a tight-fitting lid (see approved examples below).

Trash is not to be stored outside in a trash bag.  Any kitchen or bathroom trash must be in a bag and in a can.  Paper without any food remains, cardboard, grass clippings, etc., may be either in a trash bag or bundled to keep it together and set out without a trash can.

Lids must be on and fit tightly and cannot be merely sitting on top of the trash. If a person’s trash will not fit in one can, they must purchase additional trash cans as required in order to contain their trash properly.

Trash cans must be stored either in the rear yard inside of a fence or in a garage. Trash cans are not to be stored anywhere in front of a home or alongside an end unit, unless inside a fence.

Residents are not to discard any trash or yard debris of any kind in the common area, as it is not a dumping ground.  Common areas include wooded areas that surround part of the community.

Residents are to mark their trash cans and lids with their address so that in the event the wind blows them down the street, they will be able to be recovered.

Trash is to be set out in front of each unit no earlier than 6:00 p.m. of the day prior to the day of pickup. Do not place it out in front of a neighbor’s house or in common areas.

Trash cans or any items not picked up on trash days must be returned to the rear yard or garage within 12 hours; this typically means by 7:00 a.m. the following day.
